This 45-year-old Mahal works a deep navy field few rugs of this age could carry off — a coral medallion and salmon pinks glowing against it, with powder-blue threads running through the vine work. A red floral border keeps the whole piece warm.

Mahal weavers built their rugs to be lived on, and the balanced medallion-and-vine layout shows it — composed enough for a dining room, easy enough for a sitting area. At 6’4″ x 3’11”, it fits beside a bed or under a reading chair.
